A Day to Remember: Our First Kids Grading at Gracie Humaita Mississauga!

This weekend was a huge moment for all of us at Gracie Humaita Mississauga—we held our very first Mississauga Jiu-Jitsu Youth grading event, and we couldn’t be prouder of every student who showed up and gave their best. Watching 26 of our young athletes earn their next rank was an emotional and rewarding experience for everyone in the room. These kids have put in the hours, sweated through the tough days, and come out stronger on the other side. Their promotions weren’t given—they were earned.

Why BJJ Belts Mean More

In a world where a lot of activities are about "pay-to-play" or instant rewards, BJJ stands apart. Belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu carry real weight because they take hard work, patience, and consistency to earn. There are no shortcuts here—no participation trophies or easy promotions. That’s exactly what makes moments like this grading so special.

The kids who earned new belts have had to show up, day after day, learning that progress isn’t always linear, nor is it obvious or fast. They’ve learned that it’s okay to struggle, that sometimes you need to fail before you succeed, and that staying on the mat is what matters most. These are lessons that are becoming harder to find in today’s instant gratification world, but they are exactly what will serve these kids well as they grow up—both on and off the mats.

A Huge Thank You to Professors Dave Gonzalez and Jason Figliano

We were honoured to have Professor Dave Gonzalez and Professor Jason Figliano from Gracie Humaita Bolton with us to help run the grading. To sum it up perfectly, I want to use a quote most accredited to Sir Isaac Newton; “If I have seen farther, it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.” On Saturday morning, my students and their families were able to see the instructors who helped mould me into the coach that I am today. Their knowledge and passion really made the event run smoothly, and their presence gave the kids an extra spark of motivation. Because of the profound affect these two have had on me, they will always have a deep connection to our community, and having them here meant a lot to all of us. Thank you, Professors Dave and Jason, for being part of this special day and helping our kids shine!

Generations of Students, Learning and Leading

One of the most rewarding things about teaching BJJ is watching how every new wave of students learns from the ones who came before them. With the curriculum I’ve worked so hard to create for our Youth Program, we focus on institutionalized learning, that means we don’t just teach random moves or isolated techniques—we teach a system. That means every student, from the moment they step on the mat, is learning within a framework that builds on itself.

The beauty of this system is that new students aren’t just learning from their coaches—they’re watching the older, more experienced students. They see how higher belts move, how they drill techniques, and just as importantly, how they carry themselves on and off the mats. These older students are role models, demonstrating the etiquette and respect that are core values in BJJ. In every class, our younger kids are seeing firsthand what it looks like to stay focused, help your teammates, and leave your ego at the door. More than jiu-jitsu, they are learning to be leaders in their own communities.

This generational learning builds a powerful sense of community—everyone grows together, and we understand that we need each other to get better. As the kids who were promoted this weekend continue to develop, they’ll step into that leadership role, setting the example for the next wave of students. That’s how we keep the cycle going.

Proud Moments and Big Achievements

Watching these kids grow has been an incredible experience. Whether they were nervous walking in or confident from the start, every student rose to the occasion. From white belts earning their first stripes to those moving up to new colored belts, the hard work each of them put in was obvious. But what stood out to me the most wasn’t just the techniques—it was their attitude and sportsmanship. These kids have learned what it means to show respect, stay humble, and support their teammates, and those lessons are worth more than any belt could ever represent.

Looking Ahead to the Future

This grading is just the beginning for these students. There are more challenges ahead, but also more chances to grow, improve, and build character. Whether you’ve just earned your first stripe or you’re working toward your next big goal, remember—the journey never stops. The new belt is a sign of progress, but it also means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get back to work.

For those who are still working toward their next rank, keep going. Your time will come—just stay consistent, show up, and trust the process.

Join Us on the Mats—A Place for Every Child to Grow

To the parents who supported their kids throughout this journey—thank you for believing in them and encouraging them through the ups and downs. And to anyone reading this who’s thinking about trying BJJ for their child, we can’t recommend it enough. BJJ isn’t just about self-defense or fitness—it’s about developing life skills that will serve your child far beyond the mats.

At Gracie Humaita Mississauga, we’re building more than just martial artists—we’re building confident, disciplined young leaders who know how to work hard, respect others, and stay humble. If you’re curious about what we do here, come by and see for yourself. You’re always welcome on our mats.

Thank You—This Is Just the Start!

To the students, parents, and coaches who made this grading possible—thank you for your dedication and support. Watching these kids grow into the best versions of themselves has been an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to see what they’ll achieve next. To our young athletes—congratulations! Wear your new belts with pride, and remember that they represent more than just your skills—they represent your effort, your persistence, and your character.

Now, it’s back to work. See you on the mats!
