Every week, we see two types of people walk into our mats: talkers and doers. Talkers tell us their goals. Doers train toward them—day after day, rep after rep.

What 100% Effort Looks Like on the Mats

Effort isn’t just about working hard—it’s about working smart and consistently. That means:

  • Trying again after a failed submission
  • Listening closely to corrections and making adjustments
  • Giving your all even when you’re tired
  • Supporting teammates and leading by example

The doers become black belts. The doers gain confidence. The doers turn goals into reality.

Talk About It at Home – Keep the Message Alive

Here are some conversation starters to reinforce the message of effort at home:

  • What’s a goal you’ve talked about but haven’t started on yet?
  • What small action could you take today to begin working toward that goal?
  • When was the last time you gave 100% on something? How did it feel?

Helping your child reflect on these questions shows them that effort matters beyond the dojo.

Ask Your Child This Week:

  1. Do you want to be a talker or a doer? Why?
  2. What is something you tell people you want to accomplish, but haven’t done anything about?
  3. What is something you can start doing today to help you reach that goal?
